Automatic Cashback Mobile Phone Promotions

For anyone unfamiliar with incentivised cellular telephone offers the term automatic cash-back may seem a little peculiar or confusing. You may be wondering, why would a cellular phone company give automatic cashback, and what exactly do they mean by automatic?

First of all it is important to understand that if you get a cellular telephone contract, it is not with one company, you are in effect dealing with two (except if you go direct to the network operator). Usually you will buy your cellular phone from a shop, be it a shop on the high street or on the internet. Then you will have to pay a monthly line rental fee to your network provider. The relationship between the retailer and the network provider is commission based. That is to say that the mobile network pays sales commission to the retailer.

The shop has absolutely no way to influence the fees billed by the network provider, they are fixed. In order to sell more contracts the shop will typically spend some of their commission they charge on incentivised deals for the customer. In the late 1990’s it was adequate for them to just give away a free phone. This after all was a time when cellular telephones were really expensive and were often seen as a status symbol.

Today however, things work differently. Mobile phones are a lot more common and are a lot cheaper, so, mobile stores are forced to attract their customers with increasingly enticing incentives, for example free laptops or even free televisions.

Even So many consumers are not looking for additional free gifts, all they want is the lowest priced mobile phone deal available, and this is where automatic cashback comes into play. As the shop is unable to lower the monthly line rental of a phone rental, they offer to give some money to the customer there and then. So, for example, if the customer tries to obtain a 20% discount in line rental, the phone retailer will calculate the monetary value of thediscount and hand over the cash imediately.

The reason these deals are known as automatic cash back is that the older permutations of these deals operated a process of cash back by redemption, where consumers had to claim money back at the end of the contract. Because of dubious terms and conditions attached to these claims for cash-back many customers failed to receive their cashback, and therefore lost faith in the cashback by redemption offers.

So, the automatic cash-back deal was conceived. These deals promised more realistic savings than the cashback by redemption offers, but, the refund was guaranteed. It was automatic, paid to the customer as soon as the offer was completed, and so, the term automatic cashback was coined for this kind of mobile phone offer .

For consumers wanting an automatic cashback cellular phone offer, without doubt, the best place to find one is online. Whilst it is possible to find one of these deals on the high street it is unlikely. For one thing, the high street cell phone shops cannot generally offer such good offers or promotions purely because their overheads are greater than those of their online counterparts (though their customer service is normally better). Also, it is hard for shops to make money with these offers. The profit margins associated with automatic cash-back deals are so tight that they require constant tweaking, factoring in changes to the levels of commission paid and the price of of the phones themselves. This often means that the life of a given promotion is quite short, once that ends you (as a consumer) have to wait for the next automatic cash-back deal to come along.

For this reason cell phone comparison sites are usually the best way to find an automatic cash-back promotion, as they will show all offers by all online stores on one page. These deals are obscure, representing a tiny amount of the total number of deals on offer, and, you will have to accept an older less well featured handset in order to obtain one. But for the thrifty, automatic cash-back deals are by far the cheapest way to run a mobile phone.
