Congratulations on your new iPod nano! In a few minutes we’ll have you uploading music to your iPod nano and ready to roll. More interested in playing videos, games or audiobooks? No worries. Once you’re uploading music to your nano you’ll know how to upload all the other goodies too.

1) Get the music onto your hard drive

Most of us start out with our iPods by loading up the CDs we’ve collected over the years, so let’s start there. Copy the files from your CDs onto your computer’s hard disk so it’ll be available to your iPod manager. Note: If you use iTunes and have “Copy files to iTunes music folder” selected, you can skip copying the files to the PC — just having the CD in your computer’s CD drive will be enough.

2) Import the music into your iPod manager

What’s an iPod manager? For most of us it’s the iTunes software Apple provides you for free. If you don’t have it on your computer already to go the Apple website and download iTunes. It’s a good starting point for new users, and it’s free!

By the way, using iTunes to manage iPod files does NOT keep you from buying music from other companies — I buy music downloads from three different vendors but use iTunes to move them back and for from my iPod.

Decide if you’d like to have all your files in one location on the computer. If so, it’s easiest if you tell iTunes to copy all the files there for you. In iTunes choose Edit, Preferences, Advanced from the menu and click the “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library.”

Okay, you’re ready to import the music to iTunes. There’s several ways to import, but the most common is to click (from the top menu) File, Add Folder to Library, and find and select the directory that contains your music. Click the “OK” button to add the music to the library’s music list. You can also use the Control + O keys and select single files to add.

3) Connect up the iPod

You probably already did this, but just in case: connect your iPod nano to your computer with the the USB cable that came with your nano. You’ll know the connection’s successful when the left-hand menu in iTunes shows your iPod.

Now, decide if you want to let iTunes handle synchronizing with your iPod or if you want to handle things manually. I like the “manually manage” approach — it lets me decide which files to move to my nano. It also lets me synch up different computers to just one iPod.

4) Finally! Start uploading music to your nano

Are you going to let iTunes manage the uploads? If so, you’re ready to start. Click your iPod’s icon, select “Sync” in the lower right corner, and iTunes handles the rest.

Will you manage uploads manually? You’ll need to do a quick, one-time setup. In iTunes, click the nano’s icon and select “Manually manage music and videos” on the iTunes screen. Now you just select the music you want and drag it onto the iPod icon. Voila! The music uploads.

5) Be sure to eject your iPod

Never disconnect your iPod nano without ejecting it first. Not taking that extra minute risks corrupting the files. Eject from iTunes by clicking the button at bottom right of the screen.

6) Go find more music

When I work late (after everyone’s gone) I like to play my iPod nano on my computer speakers. There was a time when I didn’t know how to do this, since my work computer doesn’t have the music files on it — but I do now. Read on for this and other tips for living the iPod life.

Ready? Play the iPod through Computer Speakers: This sounds more complicated than it is. If you start getting confusued when you read it go to my website (link’s at bottom of this article) and look and the pictures I’ve made. You’ll be fine, I promise. In iTunes, select your iPod from left-hand side of the screen. Choose the “Summary” tab in the center of iTunes and click on the “Manually manage music and videos” checkbox. You’re ready to go: just choose a song or play list from the left-hand list for your iPod and hit the iTunes play button. Still confused? Remember, I have pictures on my website to help you out.

Turn Your Nano into an Alarm Clock: Remember the last time you were in a hotel and HAD to be up at a certain time? How many times did you wake up and stare at the ceiling, worrying you wouldn’t wake up? No more. I use my iPod nano for an alarm clock. Here’s how.

On the Extras menu, use the click wheel to select Clock > Alarm Clock. The screen will show a set of options for configuring your alarm. First, toggle Alarm to On if it isn’t already. Choose Time and select the time the alarm should go off. Select the Repeat menu to set how often the alarm should ring. I have one alarm set for Weekdays and another for Weekends. Now for the bigger decision: Sound. You can either set the iPod to Beep or to a Playlist. If you use Playlist the sound goes out through earphones or an external speaker — which is what I use at night. If you’re travelling you might consider setting it to Beep, since it’ll use the iPod’s built-in speaker.

Using the Sleep Timer: If you like to fall asleep to music, there’s another section in Extras you’ll like: the sleep timer. When I go to bed I plug my iPod into speakers in the bedroom and set the sleep timer for 60 minutes. Now you have music to fall asleep by.

Another Tip — the Volume Limit: Do you wish your iPod would play louder? (Or does it play too loud?) On the Settings menu check out the Volume Limit option. You can adjust the maximum volume up or down here with your click wheel. You can also adjust the sound mix by choosing EQ (equalizer) on the Settings menu.
